Days go by and many people move without getting closer to their own goals, feeling like they did nothing yesterday or today. We all know someone who always seems to be full of projects that they never seem to achieve or carry out successfully. Now, why does this happen? More importantly, what can I do to achieve a different result?
The lack of personal vision causes this feeling of “Doing nothing” or of “Never getting” where I want to go.
"The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision”. Helen Keller (1880 - 1968), an American writer who was blind and deaf.
First, we need to begin by understanding what personal vision is and what it is used for. Personal Vision is a verbal construct in which we define the desired future. It is a tool that allows us to design a future in which we express in present tense the events that we hope will happen in the future, but speaking of them as if they were already a fait accompli.
For example: “My personal vision is, in a span of 5 years, to be a distinguished and recognized professional in the region, accompanying processes of personal and organizational transformation and maintaining the values of service that characterize me”.
Designing our future using this tool will allow us to plan our actions using personal vision as a guide towards where to go.
When writing your personal vision, consider the following attributes for a POWERFUL VISION:
- Open up a possibility: We don't need a vision for what is already possible.
- Break with the recurrence of the past and open a door to the future.
- Be an exceeding goal and achievable over time.
- Consider every day as a starting point.
- Create the context and the “why” of the action.
- Contain an intense description of what the person or the organization will be like once they achieve it.
- Include the term of achievement.
- Express it in language as a deep commitment.
- Generate a driving emotional force.
- Keep it alive in day-to-day conversations.
- Be a shared vision.
One of the keys to a powerful vision is the realism with which a reality is pronounced, communicated, and maintained that is not yet but will undoubtedly be. When listening to the vision, there should be no doubts about what you want to achieve and when it will happen. When writing it, visualize not only what will happen but also how you will feel and relate to others in this new reality. Let your mind fly and connect with all the possibilities of your being. We design and redesign ourselves constantly, and building your vision and personal mission is the first step to achieve what you propose.
