Did you know that 90% of candidates feel insecure when answering this question? And did you know that 100% of recruiters require this information to move forward in the selection process?
The question about salary expectations always causes discomfort in candidates for fear of being discarded from the process.
Now, if you are actively looking and really interested in being selected for that job offer, I give you 4 key points to effectively communicate your claim and manage to advance in the process.
1.- Respond
It is essential to be clear about the salary you require as a professional. Avoiding the question or answering that you should first know the tasks and responsibilities of the position will not contribute to your interview or your professional image.
Firstly, if you applied to this job offer, you should already know the responsibilities of the position to quantify it in your response. Secondly, you will surely have a salary range that you are not willing to reduce regardless of the position.
Because of this, responding will position you better in the job interview.
2.- Answer a range
You can say, for example, 50 thousand to 60 thousand. Answering a range shows openness and flexibility and above all, it makes it clear to the interviewer that there is interest on your part in knowing the economic offer.
If you are working take your current situation as a reference to communicate it and on that, define an approximate range. "Currently I am earning X amount plus X benefits. And my expectation is to improve my current situation".
If you are not currently working and you have lost knowledge about salary values in the market, it is important that you spend time researching more about this topic. Even more so, if you apply actively, as it will give you information about the industries and the most sought after positions.
If the posting has this information, you can take this time to verify that the information is correct and ask more about it.
3.- Quantify additional benefits.
A salary proposal, is not only composed of the gross monthly salary. There are additional benefits that can be quantified in the offer (Food, commissions, bonuses, transportation/Car) and there are also well-being benefits that could increase your quality of life (Home Office, flex Fridays, additional vacations, health programs)
Communicate that regardless of the salary range, you will consider the complete economic offer and in case of additional benefits, this range could be modified.
If you communicated your current salary, include benefits (if you have any) highlighting those that are fundamental to you.
If you do not currently have benefits, take this moment to ask the recruiter if the position has extra benefits that you can learn about.
4.- The most important
Clearly communicate that compensation is not the only important factor for you.
If this job proposal interests you, be clear and rely on the points that you find interesting about the position, regardless of the final salary number.
This way, you will show flexibility in listening to the opportunity in its entirety. You will show professionalism and commitment to the selection process and your image as a candidate will increase among others.
You will thus open the doors to the company regardless of whether your expectation does not align with this position.
The interviewer, who is likely the person hiring for this area or team, will want to maintain a link with you for future opportunities in the company.
